Music and Us: Our New Playlist

Image
I am excited to do this Blog because I am interested in learning about new music from different cultures. It took me a while to figure out which cultures and styles of music I wanted to do. I tried to pick music from cultures that sound very different from each other so you can really see the variety of styles shown in each music piece.      The first piece of music I want to introduce is from Jamaica (North America) and the artist is Bob Marley. My dad was a huge fan of his music so I grew up with it. Reggae music makes me feel so free and happy when I listen to it. I love so many songs by him. I loved how much he adored his culture and included it in his music. The song I picked is called Stir It Up by Bob Marley and The Wailers. I chose to go the modern route this one because I can relate more to this style of music.      The next country that I am going to do is music from the Dominican Republic(North America). I visited this p...

Music and Rituals

Image
The ritual that I'm going to be talking about is one that is very special and important to me. My ritual is on Christmas with all my siblings and we perform " All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. This tradition started when I was younger because I used to love to sing all the time. When everyone was over at my grandparent's house, I was doing something for people to watch. I first started doing the song by myself but eventually made my brother perform it with me. Then our other siblings began to join us as they got older. It has changed a couple times throughout the years but we also make sure to do the song together at the very end. Family is something that Is very important to me and I cherish every moment I have with them. Going to my grandparents on Christmas has been my favorite thing ever since I was little. I would go over to my grandparents the day before and help her decorate the house and the tree and then we would make cookies and watch some o...

Music and Family

For this Blong entry, I interviewed my mom about music, and I will be setting it up as a dialogue between us. Me: Mom, who is ur favorite artist? Mom: Alica keys. Me: Did ur parents sing u lullabies? Mom: Yes, twinkle twinkle little star. Me: Would you consider music to have been a big part of your social life? - Music was definitely a big part of my life in my 20s but not so much now. Me: What were the biggest artists when you were younger?-  The biggest artists when I was younger were The New Kids on the Block, Boys to Men, and TLC. Me: Is there an instrument you wish you could play? Mom: the piano because I think it makes you look professional and it seems fun to play Me: Did your parents like your music? Mom: No, Me: What did you think of your parents' music? Mom: It was like old school, slow, and not hip enough for me. Me: Have you been to any concerts? Mom: Yes Me: What were they? Mom: Coolio. Me: Do you like music more now or when you were younger? Mom: Younger Me: why...

Music and Gender

Image
Music and Gender      In the genre that I am going to talk about, there is definitely a distinct line that separates men's and women's expectations in Hip Hop/R&B. I see a lot of the mistreatment displayed on social media. Many women rappers/artists get their information posted a lot and the comments will be hating on them or trying to drag them down. When a male artist gets posted for something around the same lines then that comment section is totally different. An artist that goes by the Name of Sexy Red is a big controversial artist. On a side note, I am not the biggest fan of hers but I do like some of her music. Her music is a bit vulgar and she does show herself off a little more than most people but that is just the way that she is. I don't think someone should get hate because they are being their authentic self. As a society, we preach a lot about being original and having your own style but when a dark-skinned woman does it, people start feelin...

Hi Everyone! My name is Bentlee. I am originally from Asheville, NC. I am a transfer from Guilford College in Greensboro where I played basketball. While I was there I got my associate degree in arts. I have played basketball and softball my whole life but I chose to pursue basketball in college. I live in the mountains so I love being outside all the time. Whenever I want to clear my mind I just drive up to the parkway and enjoy the view. I have 3 dogs who I love dearly and keep me on my toes all the time. Their names are Huncho, Draco, and Fat Fat. I enjoy spending all my time with my family because I feel like family means the most in the world. I am the middle child and I have an older and younger brother. I also want to major in Psychology and child and family studies. 1. An example of something I like right now is "TBH" by PartyNextDoor. I like this song right now because it relates to a situation in my life that I was going through. My friend and I also reall...
