Music and Gender
In the genre that I am going to talk about, there is definitely a distinct line that separates men's and women's expectations in Hip Hop/R&B. I see a lot of the mistreatment displayed on social media. Many women rappers/artists get their information posted a lot and the comments will be hating on them or trying to drag them down. When a male artist gets posted for something around the same lines then that comment section is totally different. An artist that goes by the Name of Sexy Red is a big controversial artist. On a side note, I am not the biggest fan of hers but I do like some of her music. Her music is a bit vulgar and she does show herself off a little more than most people but that is just the way that she is. I don't think someone should get hate because they are being their authentic self. As a society, we preach a lot about being original and having your own style but when a dark-skinned woman does it, people start feeling some type of way. I can agree that sometimes Sexy Red does do a bit too much but at the end of the day who am I to tell her how to act? I also think that colorism plays a huge part in the women's side of the industry more than the men's. Lightskin women have always been more desirable, which makes it easier for them to get more attention. When Meg Thee Stallion got into that incident with Tory Lanez it caused a lot of backlash and commotion and it is still going on to this day. Another artist who has been around for a long time was Lil Kim. She was very popular around the Tupac/Biggie era. Sometimes society thinks that women can't make it big without doing something for it. Lil Kim always had to deal with the beauty standard of society which is why she has all that plastic surgery done. Some artist have even called her out on her body publicly to shame her. I get that you might not like something, but why do you need to go publicly about it to see someone get harassed? The last artist that I want to talk about is Lauryn Hill. She is my favorite artist out of the ones that I have mentioned. She is a very Pro-Black person which caused her to get a lot of hate and not be as popularised for the media as she should have been. Sometimes it seems like the industry just wants the women to be appealing to the public and just sing and do nothing else which is not what Lauryn is. She stood up for what she believed in and she advocated for the black community and she never let the backlash stop her from what she did.
