Music and Family

For this Blong entry, I interviewed my mom about music, and I will be setting it up as a dialogue between us.

Me: Mom, who is ur favorite artist? Mom: Alica keys.

Me: Did ur parents sing u lullabies? Mom: Yes, twinkle twinkle little star.

Me: Would you consider music to have been a big part of your social life? - Music was definitely a big part of my life in my 20s but not so much now.

Me: What were the biggest artists when you were younger?-  The biggest artists when I was younger were The New Kids on the Block, Boys to Men, and TLC.

Me: Is there an instrument you wish you could play? Mom: the piano because I think it makes you look professional and it seems fun to play

Me: Did your parents like your music? Mom: No, Me: What did you think of your parents' music? Mom: It was like old school, slow, and not hip enough for me.

Me: Have you been to any concerts? Mom: Yes Me: What were they? Mom: Coolio.

Me: Do you like music more now or when you were younger? Mom: Younger Me: why? Mom: I used music to have fun and feel free and now it is sort of a distraction.

Me: How did music affect people when you were younger? Mom: Music would make people feel good,  full of life, and express themselves.

Me: How did you learn about new music growing up?Mom: Through the radio, CDs, and MTV. I remember we would turn on the TV and listen to music and if we liked it then we would go out and buy it.

Me: Does music help you connect to your community?Mo: I would say yes, especially with my friends.

Me: Does music calm you down?- Mom: no, it made me want to go have fun or do things.

Me: Do you have any movies about music performers that you like? Mom:  I remember watching Fantasia, and her life story documentary and I really liked it.

Me: Do you go dancing? Mom: Yes, my friends and I would go dancing pretty much every weekend and it was one of my favorite memories.

Me: Is there any kind of music you don't like? Why? Mom: I don't really like country music because it always seems sad and it was just something I never felt connected with.

Me: Is music a big part of your day-to-day life?Mom: No, not anymore.

Me: Has music changed you? Mom: when I was younger yes, it made me able to express myself in certain ways that I couldn't normally do.

Me: When do you think you started to develop your own musical tastes?MPm: Probably when I was about 13.

Me: What was your favorite song as a kid?- any New Kid on the Block songs.

Me: How did your musical taste develop as you got older? Mom: I don't listen to songs that would make me want to get up and dance or go out, and now I listen to slower songs, not as upbeat, and more laid back.

Me: What do you think of the music I listen to? Mom: You kind of listen to all styles of music, some of it is not my taste but then some of it is older music that I enjoyed listening to as well.

Me: Do you think the new generation of music is really different than when you were younger? why? Mom: It's a little more sexual now and it makes people want to go fight and kill.

Me: What was the most popular genre of music when you were a kid? Mom: I would probably say like R&B.

Mom: Which musician(s) influenced you the most when you were younger? Mom: I don't really have one but if I have to pick then I would say Mariah Carey

Me: What are your top three genres of music? Mom: Probably R&B, rap, and some throwbacks.

Me: Do you like the music that is popular right now? Mom: I would say no because I can't really relate to it and I don't really listen to it much.

  1. Hi Bentlee! I think that it's so interesting that your mom's music taste has changed as she's gotten older and that she doesn't really like a lot of modern-day music. I like how she said that a lot of people like listening to music because it's a way of self-expression and helps to bring us all together. Music really is a universal language and can be such a beautiful thing to experience, especially when around the people we love and cherish the most. Thank you for sharing!
